Linda Joy Kattwinkel is a visual artist as well as an attorney. She practices primarily copyright, trademark, and arts law. She is an experienced transactional attorney and litigator, particularly in federal courts and the Trademark Trial and Appeals Board. Ms. Kattwinkel has also been mediating and arbitrating intellectual property and arts related disputes since 1987.

Before becoming an attorney, Ms. Kattwinkel worked for thirteen years as a graphic artist in editorial, corporate and advertising design, illustration and typography. Today she paints in plein air and at her studio in San Francisco, where she sometimes participates in Open Studios. Her artwork has been shown in over twenty-five museum and gallery exhibitions.
During law school Ms. Kattwinkel co-founded, edited, and designed the logo for the Hastings Women's Law Journal. Ms. Kattwinkel published an article and artwork in the journal, On Motherhood and Working , 3 Hastings Women's LJ1 (1992). She externed with the Honorable Marilyn Hall Patel, United States District Judge for the Northern District of California. In 1992 and began her legal practice as a long-term judicial clerk to the Honorable Claudia Wilken, United States District Judge for the Northern District of California. She then joined Owen, Wickersham & Erickson, P.C., where she practiced intellectual property and arts law as an associate and member for over twelve years before joining Oliver, Kattwinkel & Sabec in January 2008.
Ms. Kattwinkel received her alternate dispute resolution training from CLA and The Center for Mediation and Law. She serves as a trainer and volunteer mediator and arbitrator for CLA’s Arts Arbitration and Mediation Service.
Ms. Kattwinkel speaks frequently to visual artists, designers and lawyers, including for example, at the annual Visual Arts & the Law Conference, AIGA national and local conferences, SCBWI annual conference, and ICON, the Illustration Conference. She recently co-authored the AIGA’s form contracts for designers. Ms. Kattwinkel is the author of Legalities, a regular online column on legal issues for artists, for the GAG Northern California chapter. She also moderates an online discussion board on legal issues for SCBWI members. Her articles on copyright and arts law have appeared in various publications, including the GAG national newsletter and STEP Inside Design magazine.
